Brilliant Silence
Two Alaskan Kodiak bears joined a small circus, where the pair appeared in a nigthly parade pulling a covered wagon. The two were taught to somersault, to spin, to stand on their heads, and to dance on their hind legs, paw in paw, stepping in unison. Under a spotlight the dancing bears, a male and a female, soon became favorites of the crowd. The circus went south on a west coast tour through Canada to Calfornia and on down into Mexico, through Panama into South America, down the Andes the length of Chile to those southernmost isles of Tierra del Fuego.
There a jaguar jumped the juggler, the owner of the circus, and afterward mortally mauled the animal trainer, and the shocked showpeople disbanded in dismay and horror. In the confusion the bears went their own way. Without a master, they wandered off by themselves into the wilderness on those densely wooded, wildly windy, subantarctic islands. Utterly away from people, on an out-of-the-way uninhabited island, and in a climate they found ideal, the bears mated, thrived, multiplied, and after a number of generations populated the entire island. Indeed, after some years, descendants of the two moved out onto half a dozen adjacent islands; and seventy years later, when scientists finally found and enthusiastically studied the bears, it was discoverede that all of them, to a bear, were performing splendid circus tricks.
On nigths when the sky is bright and the moon is full, they gather to dance. They gather the cubs and the juveniles in a circle around them. They gather together out of the wind at the center of a sparkling, circular crater left by a meteorite which had fallen in a bed of chalk. Its glassy walls are chalk white, its flat floor is covered with white gravel, and it is well drained and dry. No vegetation grows within. When the moon rises above it, the light reflecting off the walls fills the carter with a pool of moonlight, in that vicinity. Scientists speculate that originally the full moon had reminded the two bears of the circus spotlight, and for that reason they danced. Yet, it might be asked, what music do the descendants dance to?
Paw in paw, stepping in unison ... what music can they possibly hear inside their heads as they dance under the full moon and the Aurora Australis, as they dance in brilliant silence?

Dos osos blancos viajaban con un pequeño circo. Todas las noches, los dos osos aparecían empujando un carro. Los dos osos habían sido adiestrados para dar vueltas mortales, para hacer trompos, para hacer la vertical y para danzar sobre sus patas traseras, agarrados de la mano, dando los pasos al mismo tiempo. Los osos danzantes, un macho y una hembra, pronto se convirtieron en los favoritos de la multitud. El circo viajó al sur en un tour por la costa oeste que atravesó Canadá hasta California y de ahí hacia abajo llegando a Méjico; recorrió Panamá hasta América del Sur, bajo por los Andes pasando por Chile hasta las islas australes de Tierra del Fuego.
Un día un jaguar se lanzo sobre el presentador, el dueño del circo, y después lastimo mortalmente al domador. El público se disperso alarmado y horrorizado. En la confusión los osos se escaparon. Sin amo, vagaron por su cuenta por las boscosas y ventosas islas subantarticas. Absolutamente solos, en una isla deshabitada, y en un clima que les resultaba ideal, los osos se aparearon, se multiplicaron y después de unas cuantas generaciones poblaron la isla entera. En realidad, después de algunos años, los descendientes de los dos osos se trasladaron a mas de la mitad de las doce islas vecinas; y setenta años más tarde, cuando los científicos finalmente los hallaron y comenzaron a estudiar su comportamiento, se descubrió que todos ellos realizaban espléndidas acrobacias de circo.
En las noches cuando el cielo es brillante y hay luna llena, se reúnen a danzar: los cachorros en el medio y los más jóvenes, alrededor, formando un círculo. Permanecen todos juntos fuera del alcance del viento en el centro de un centelleante cráter hecho por un meteorito que cayo en un lecho de arcilla. Las espejadas paredes son de arcilla blanca. El suelo, liso, esta cubierto de grava blanca y es seco. Ninguna clase de vegetación crece allí adentro.
Cuando la luna se eleva sobre el cráter, la luz que se refleja en las paredes llena el lugar con el agua de luna. El piso del cráter, entonces, es más brillante que cualquier otra cosa cercana. Los científicos especulan que originalmente la luna llena pudo haberles hecho acordar a los dos osos las luces del circo y por esa razón comenzaron a danzar. ¿Sin embargo, habría que preguntarse, qué música es la que bailan los descendientes de los dos osos blancos?
Agarrados de la mano, danzando juntos ... ¿Qué música podrían escuchar dentro de sus cabezas mientras bailan bajo la luna llena y la aurora austral, mientras danzan en un brillante silencio?
