Gertrude Stein nació en 1874 en Pennsylvania en el seno de una familia de origen judío-alemán. Escribió poesía, novela, ensayo, obras de teatro y operas. Residió en Paris durante aproximadamente 40 años. Su casa fue punto de reunión de los artistas más representativos del cubismo. Intentó relacionar el cubismo con la literatura: las pinturas de Cezanne y Matisse inspiraron su libro Three Lives (1909) y las de Picasso su poema en prosa Tender Buttons (1914). Hizo frente durante la ocupación nazi en Francia durante la 2da Guerra mundial a la persecución a los judíos y a l@s homosexuales. Su novela Q.E.D. (1903) fue publicada póstumamente bajo el título Things as They Are. En Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1932) registra su relación con A. Toklas. Sus textos fueron convertidos por el compositor Virgil Thomson en las óperas Four Saints In Three Acts y The Mother Of Us All (1947). Murió en 1946 en Francia.
